YOQAL is the distilled essence of an exceptional musical combination. Since meeting in the early 2000s, Palestinian oud player and singer Kamilya Jubran and French double-bassist Sarah Murcia have been exploring music beyond any stylistic or geographical boundaries. Their duo represents a profound intercultural dialogue, which is expressed not through explanations, but through direct experience.

The album Yoqal captures both two decades worth of shared exploration and the core of this collaboration. The music navigates the crossroads between East and West, drawing on various traditions and contemporary forms of expression. Oud, voice, and double bass intertwine so organically that their timbres mirror each other, at times blending inextricably. The classic division of lead and accompaniment dissolves, the aim is the “shared breath” of the music. As with poetry, the goal is not to decipher every detail, but to capture a sense of the inexpressible within the fleeting moment of a sound.

Kamila Jubran, who was once the distinctive voice of the legendary Palestinian band Sabreen, has been living in Europe since 2002 and is one of the most important artistic figures of the Arabic avant-garde. Her work combines tradition and radical open-mindedness, music and social commitment. As a founding member of the Zamkana Foundation, she initiates projects that promote artistic freedom and new forms of cultural exchange.

Sarah Murcia, meanwhile, is one of the most prominent figures of the French music scene. As a double-bassist, composer, and producer, she operates with inexhaustible curiosity at the intersection between jazz, pop, and transdisciplinary experimentation. Her musical fingerprint is as strong as it is unconventional – she is always ready to welcome the unexpected.

Together, Jubran and Murcia make music with an enchanting levity, which invites the audience to let themselves be deeply moved by rhythm, sound, and meaning.
